Miss New York 2006

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted, but I finally have some big news. My sister recently competed in the Miss New York Scholarship Pageant in Watertown, New York. After five years of competing in the Miss America system, she has finally won! I was recently talking to Jeremy about the website I have created for my sister (www.missnewyork2006.com) and he suggested I post an entry. Feel free to visit my sister’s site to see where she is making appearances. Also, check out her photo album of the events she has already attended.

Wish her luck at Miss America in California in January!

al Jazeera Promotes Terrorism

Heres another Red Flag for you, from our favorite spinster Donald Rumsfeld:

“If anyone here lived in the Middle East and watched a network like Al-Jazeera day after day after day, even if you were an American you would begin to believe that America was bad,”

from Salon (don’t bother clicking on Salon’s link, you’ll only get the quote and then they’ll ask you to become a member)

Of course he’s right, and for the same reason people inside America think we are so great: Bias. If al Jazeera runs stories about all the negative things America does, and Fox runs stories about how great we are, you’ll end up with ignorant people watching both networks.

I think we’re just a normal country, not a great evil or good, with one exception: We are certainly one of the most powerful countries, so our deeds, good or bad have the potential to impact much more of the world.

Unfortunately, for any country i think the trend is that foreign policy will generally be good for that country (or a subgroup thereof) and neutral or negative for other countries, and thats clearly the case with our foreign policy.

We do need to take the next step in our evolution as a country so badly.

The evolution debate

This is an interesting article. It talks about how people are confused about evolutions status as a “theory”. I hear people all to often voice their lack of support for evolution because it is “only a theory”. This article more lcearly explains why it is a theory and why it is also a set of facts.

The false consequences of sex

I wonder if this counts as educational spending?

I’m sure Bush didn’t have any part in writing this educational material, but thanks to his conservative christian roadmap, shit like this apparently gets funded.

Salon talks about a new congressional investigation that reveals numerous issues from extreme untruths to unsubstantiated claims presented as fact.

I know you all hate the damn salon ads, but there is enough meat in the first paragraph to make this worth clicking, even if you don’t watch the ad to read the rest.

did you know you can get pregnant just by touching a vagina or penis? I guess thats why doctors wear those latex gloves. I suppose if you were finger painting with semen first that could be true.

Leaflets

These are some of the leaflets that we’ve been dropping over Iraq. I can’t decide if this is propaganda aimed at iraqis or americans.

if we do half as good a job of fucking y’all up as we did last time, the survivors of your family are sure as hell going to need you.

Freedom Fries!?

ok, this has got to be the lamest thing i’ve heard in my entire life. The cafeteria at congress has renamed “french fries” and “french toach” to “freedom fries” and “freedom toast,” in order to slap france in the face.

not only is this wicked* fucking petty, but its also very ironic, since neither of these dishes came from France, but are from the land of the grease and the home of the lard, USA.

I’m sure France is actually happy that those horrible sample’s of american food no longer bear their country’s name.

Actually, i think french fries were invented in Belgium, and i forget where french toast came from, but you can thank us for over doing it and making them both staples of the standard diet.

I think i’ll start calling them “Fatah Fries” and “Dictator Toast”.

*I’m from the Boston area, in case you didn’t know

Its all about the semantics

So there is this ongoing discussion here about bias in the media/news.

I think everyone agrees that the bias exists.

underdog says humans are inherently biased, and it can’t go away.

tx, pives and myself think that american journalism should not be ‘biased’ the way it is.

I think what’s really going on here is just a semantic problem.

underdog is definitely right that journalism will always have the biases of the journalist.

I think what the rest of us are talking about is actually integrity or responsibility.

For example, to develop the doctor analogy txillardeli brought up, a doctor will always be biased while he’s working. he’ll be biased towards the style of medicine he studied, or currently follows. That doesn’t mean he’s not doing a good service. However, if a doctor is always making decisions based on how much money he will get, or based on religious beliefs, then he is not being responsible or in integrity.

one might argue that its ok for a doctor to make decisions based on religious beliefs, and you could probably quote many examples of a doctor making a decision based on religion that was good for the patient. I assert that it would merely be a coincidence that the religious led decision turned out to be the same decision as if he were taking the patient’s best interests into account. So you can see, it is dangerous to go on religion instead of just the patients best interests, because they may not always align, and God help you when they don’t.

for the record, underdog, nobody on this site simply picks a single non american news source that they agree with and reads it as gospel. (Except maybe floo420… i don’t know about those canadians) I know you didn’t ask for feedback on your comment, but thats a big faux pas to assume the person you are talking to is a dumb ass, without evidence =)

Yahweh, Allah, and Jehovah walk into a bar.

Updated!:

Or could we just say “The God of Abraham”? Well we probably would if we were watching a translation of a German statesman. When he casually says “Meine Gott!” We wouldn’t have an American English translation to My Gott. We would translate it to my God. The French say Dieu, we would translate to God. The Spanish Dios, God. The Hebrew term is Yahweh (though Jews don’t speak it too often) anytime i’ve seen a documentary about the Life of Moses on the History Channel we translate it to God. Even non -mainstream religions. Whatever their term for super-guy might be, we always translate it to relate it to God. or at least a god.

a scent of poo is coming from that pile of media

Hey kids,

I just pulled a Txillardegi, and composed a comment that ended up being long enough for a new entry. Although in all fairness to our official site linguist, I’m certainly not trying to compare my writing to his in quality OR length!

This is in response to pives’ “Allah” post, mainly to underdog’s comments.

expecting the media to be objective may be a pipe dream, but there is a difference between being biased by your opinions and knowingly (or ignorantly) taking part in propaganda intended to create false perceptions.
