Isn’t it Ironic?

An Iraqi exile who had proclaimed himself Baghdad’s mayor and begun issuing directives to city workers was arrested Sunday by U.S. forces, who accused him of exerting authority he didn’t have.

don’t ya think?

Good “day to party” Friday

went to Daryl’s “moving out” party friday night, and enlisted eric and daryl to help me turn it from a playstation party to a booty shakin party.

pretty much everyone who didn’t want to dance left, and we danced all night to my ipod, and some guys laptop that had all these crazy DJ mixing features.

after everyone left, i played grand theft auto for the first time. that game is off the hook.

the party was so great, we are having a 2nd moving out party before daryl moves, gamers need not apply.

here are the pics, but be warned, i danced the whole night and didn’t pull out the camera till i was tired.

I hope this is the last domino

solutions to the “hussein problem” huh?

saddam is certainly a horrible leader, but lets look at the reason’s he’s no good, and the reason’s that mister bush told us we were going to war…

reasons saddam is no good: he’s oppressive, he gives nothing to the people of iraq, and keeps plenty for himself. he certainly had a pro arab anti kurd stance, which is unfair to the kurds.

reason’s we went to war, supposedly: he is a threat to america’s safety, and the safety of his neighbors. UN sanctions weren’t working. he has “weapons of mass destruction”

ok, threat to american safety? i don’t really thing so. and given the extremely quick defeat he suffered, i don’t think he was a big threat to any of his neighbors, especially with the world scrutinizing so closely. The fact that he was conquered so easily compared to last time shows that the UN sanctions certainly weren’t being ineffective. i mean give me a break, they haven’t found any WOMD yet. now i’m sure they will, but its obvious that there is no significant amount of them.

all of these things, both the ones cited by bush, and the ones we all knew about saddam, even though bush wasn’t smart enough to cite them have one thing in common: there are plenty of countries with healthy economies and no sanctions that are committing these acts to a far worse degree than Iraq:

WOMD: N. Korea who is aggressive, and Israel who is in the same region as Iraq, and therefor perhaps more relevant than Korea in this discussion

Oppression: Israel - where the right to vote is based on religion and race, and so is the right to keep land you have the deed to, and sometimes the right to live. Iran — i’m not saying lets invade them, but from what i’ve read women are treated worse there than in iraq.

the only good reason i’ve ever heard for invading Iraq is that if you going to start a campaign of reshaping the middle east to your own ideas, and thats a questionable “if”, then iraq is the perfect place to start, because of their past aggressions, UN scrutiny and the resulting isolation they have from the world.

now thats not really a good reason, just a logistical reason to choose iraq as your first unjustified war.

so it doesn’t seem like a solution to the “hussein problem” is really what was needed, rather a solution to the “bush problem” which is the attitude of “god bless america, and no one else” (line stolen from a chris rock movie)

Tip the domino part three

hmmm.

ok, the point was that the war with iraq has directly impacted those two situations in a large way.

to acknowledge that they are bad situations without acknowledging the US responsibility in them is not answering my post, because my post was about the US hand in these bad things, not just bad things in general.

i’m not going to answer your questions, because i just had dinner with a man who repeatedly asked me to support my points with counterpoints, without having addressed my initial points. So, i’m not going to do that again here.

as a side note, i’ve discovered that when people argue about this sort of thing, they are usually on two totally different planes (geometry, not aircraft, although i guess that works too), and rarely touch on the intersection of those 2 planes. as a result, the conversation looks something like:

A: the rose is red
B: no the rose smells nice

while our conversation is much more complex, and its impossible for us to look at it externally, like we do with the rose, i suspect its very similar.

with that in mind, both sets of values/morals/concerns are valid, but isn’t the rose so much nicer when we can manage to see both aspects of it?

i’m so sick of talking past people and having them talk past me.

Tip the domino part two

in response to underdog’s comment:

my solutions to what exactly?

I’ll give some speculative answers (pre-emptive if you will), but as someone who seemed to support the war, I’d say you need to address the points i’ve made before its my turn to respond again.

my solution to how much we’ve fucked up our reputation in the global community is to not go acting like we can do whatever the hell we want. we’ve undone about 50 years of diplomacy in the last 4 years.

The only thing that made the UN irrelevant was president Bush saying so, and the UN being unwilling to threaten the US with sanctions for breaking international law, but not the way it was behaving in Iraq wrt inspections.

by the way, that is another one of my solutions to the USA’s disregard for global diplomacy. The UN should put sanctions on the USA, but i’m sure that won’t happen.

how can peace and democracy work if we don’t even honor the peace and democracy that the UN is supposed to provide.

the whole notion that a preemptive war is going to cause peace is inherently flawed.

if every cowboy who got his hands on an army (and i’m not just talking about Bush here) decided to bomb and invade another country just because he thought it was the right thing to do (or cause he saw political & economic gain in it) we’d have wars all over the place.

Now that the war is over, i really hope that the average person in Iraq will begin to live a better life. I am also fearful that that won’t be the case. look at our track record.

Tip the domino

I thought I’d keep track of all the negative consequences of this war, besides the human and economic damage, that were predicted, as they start to come true. notice i said “start to come true.” I’ve decided to use some preemptive journalism, but i think its pretty clear that while these example’s may not fully play out, they are certainly so much more likely to thanks to our Middle East policy:

India contemplates preemption against Pakistan, cites US attack of Iraq as precedent, and claims their own case is stronger than the US case for Iraq.

Syria openly threatens Israel after US has all but put them into Iraq’s spot on the Axis of Evil list. (shouldn’t it be the Triangle of Evil anyway?) This actually shows two points: 1) we’ve set the precedent for the “Why not?” philosophy of war 2) we’ve worsened our relations with the Arab world, rather than set up a “beacon of democracy for the Arab world”

Apple might buy Universal Music Division

Anal Worms vs. Animatrix

So just this past weekend I went to see Dream Catcher with a few friends of mine. Actually I went to see Dream Catcher because there was an Animatrix movie before the “Feature Presentation.” Anyway, to make a long, horribly ridiculous story short, Animatrix was the whole worth of my movie ticket and it kicked ass! Dream Catcher was painful to watch.

So if you want to see the Animatrix in all it’s glory, go buy a ticket to Dream Catcher and walk out right after Animatrix.
